Wisconsin's largest city, Milwaukee was settled in 1836 with incorporation in 1848. It was a major center of German immigration and grew rapidly through the middle of the 20th century, reaching an area of 96 square miles and a peak population of 750,000.
Milwaukee has been home to the Schlitz, Miller, Blatz, and Pabst breweries, but it is Schlitz that claims to have made the city famous. Brewery tours (with free samples) are one of the principal attractions, as are the Brewers baseball team which plays in the new retractable-roof Miller Park.
Like its neighbor Chicago, Milwaukee's skyline is concentrated near where the river meets Lake Michigan, with a string of highrises extending north along the lake. The new centerpiece of the lakefront is the dynamic Milwaukee Art Museum Quadracci Pavilion designed by Santiago Calatrava S.A..
Milwaukee maintains active sister city relationships with Galway, Ireland, Nuevitas, Cuba, Parma, Italy, Queenstown, South Africa, and Schwerin, Germany.
