Nashville is where country music lives and breathes, but it has truly earned its nickname Music City, USA. The city has nurtured generations of singers and musicians from country to rock to blues. From the honky-tonk floors to the symphony orchestra walls, there’s more live music here than anywhere in the world. The city is home to Vanderbilt and Tennessee State Universities and a flourishing health care management industry that provide a diverse and healthy economic base. With a consolidated city and county government, the city is now estimated to be the largest in Tennessee. Combined with the sprawling suburbs, it also holds title to the largest metropolitan area in the state. Named after General Francis Nash in 1784, Nashville became Tennessee's capital in 1843. Today, the city along the Cumberland River is a crossroads of American culture and boomtown of the upper South. Nashville is located within a day's drive, or a two-hour flight, of more than half the population of the United States.
