Winston-Salem is a manufacturing, educational, and medical center located in northwestern North Carolina, about 45 miles from the Blue Ridge Mountains. With Greensboro and High Point, it forms a metropolitan area of over 1,000,000 – sometimes referred to as the Piedmont Triad. The home of RJ Reynolds Tobacco company, it is a major manufacturing center of tobacco products and has a large leaf-tobacco market. Other major industries include knitwear, hosiery, and electronic equipment. The city's largest employer is currently the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Salem was founded in 1766 by a group of Moravians from Pennsylvania who settled the area – which they called Wachovia – in 1753. Remains of their original village of Bethabara are preserved in the northwestern part of the city. Winston was founded in 1849 one mile north of Salem Square as the seat of the newly formed Forsyth County. In 1913 the two cities merged to form Winston-Salem. Salem has been preserved in the Old Salem historic district. It is a popular tourist attraction besides being a center of Moravian Church activities and the home of Salem College.
