Atlantic City is the largest city on the New Jersey shore and gambling mecca of the eastern United States. With the Boardwalk's towering casinos looming over the Atlantic Ocean, it's a place like no other in the country. Located just 60 miles southeast of Philadelphia and 125 miles south of New York City, there is certainly no shortage of players in the region – over 42 million adults live within a 300 mile radius. Originally founded in 1793, the city experienced rapid growth after the completion of a rail line to Camden in the 1850s. By the 1930s, population exceeded 66,000, and the city had become a major entertainment destination, hosting acts like Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, and the Miss America Pageant. In 1935, the classic board game "Monopoly" was published, featuring spots named after streets in Atlantic City. Despite their current dominance of the skyline, casinos were not part of the city's early development. They did not come into town until the late 1970s in an effort to revitalize the area. Today, with the expansion of gaming in neighboring states, the city is struggling to reinvent itself once again.
