Located on a barrier island an hour's drive southeast of Houston, Galveston is both a port city and a seaside resort. The city is known for its remarkable 19th Century Victorian homes, and also for the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States: the hurricane of September 8, 1900 which devastated the city. It is also the site of a Civil War battle. Today it is home to one of the United States' largest aquariums at Moody Gardens. On September 13, 2008 Hurricane Ike made landfall on the east end of the island, causing significant damage and sending several feet of water into the historic downtown and Strand districts for several days. Regardless of the obstacles, the Island will rebound and will open for business once again.
