Yonkers is the largest municipality in Westchester County and the fourth largest city in New York. It lies on hilly terrain beside the Hudson River just north of New York City. Across the river in New Jersey are the high cliffs of the Palisades.
European settlement began in Yonkers in 1641 when Adriaen Van Der Donck built a saw mill at the junction of the Nepperhan and Hudson Rivers. Van Der Donck was known as “De Jonkheer,” a Dutch term meaning “Young Gentleman.” Over time, the area came to be referred to as “The Yonkheer Land” and eventually Yonkers. It was incorporated as a village in 1855 and as a city in 1872.
Yonkers’ character changes from mostly urban in the southwest near the border with New York City to mostly suburban to the north and east. At one time it was home to over 270 major industries manufacturing a wide variety of products, including elevators, valves, machinery, and wiring.
Yonkers has 34 percent of Westchester County's multi-family housing, most of it located in numerous mid-rise buildings in the southwestern part of the city. Its proximity to New York City and good transit connections are making it increasingly interesting to developers.
