Flint is an industrial city located on the Flint River about 60 miles northwest of Detroit. The seat of Genesee County, it is Michigan's third largest city and the nation's second largest center of the automotive industry. The General Motors Corporation is the city's largest employer. Flint's first white settler, Jacob Smith, was a fur trader who arrived in 1819. By 1900, the city's location near large white pine forests led to Flint's leadership in carriage manufacturing, earning it the moniker "The Vehicle City." The auto industry grew rapidly after the arrival of Buick Motor Company in 1903, boosting the city's population from 13,000 in 1900 to 156,000 in 1930. In more recent years, the city has suffered periods of high unemployment during downturns in auto sales.
