Located on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, Burlington is the seat of Chittenden County and largest city in Vermont. It is a center of retail, finance, manufacturing, healthcare, and education. Institutions of higher learning include the University of Vermont, Champlain College, and the University of Vermont College of Medicine. The city is also a port and a center of tourism. Although Burlington has many mid-rise buildings in the downtown area, the tallest structures on the skyline are church towers. 19th century steeples are joined by the Burlington City Hall of 1928. On a hill overlooking the city are the towers of the Ira Allen Chapel and the Old Mill Building of the University of Vermont . Burlington was settled by Europeans in 1773. The town was surveyed and mapped by Ira Allen, brother of the famous Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen. It was incorporated as a city in 1865. The city's nickname is Queen City of Vermont because of its beautiful situation between the lake and the nearby Green Mountains.
