Located in the Appalachian Foothills of northwestern South Carolina, Greenville is the Upstate's largest city.
The first settler of what would later become Greenville was Richard Pearis, and he established a trading post and a gristmill in what was Cherokee country in 1765. Development of the city was relatively slow until 1873 until the Atlanta and Charlotte Air Line railway would choose a route that passed directly through the city. With the new railway, Greenville's textile industry would take-off, and the city would later become known as the "Textile Capital of the World." The textile industry has since gone into decline, and the city has reinvented itself as a place of economic opportunity.
Greenville has done much to enhance and revitalize its downtown since the late 1960s. Through government initiatives and private investment, Main Street has evolved into a very pedestrian friendly corridor with many unique shops and restaurants.
