Portsmouth is a coastal city on the south coast of England, built around a large and thriving harbour.
Home to the British Royal Navy for more than 500 years, Portsmouth's mix of historic ships, castles, forts and museums make it one of the best places in which to explore the maritime history of Great Britain.
The historic dockyard is home to Admiral Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory, as well as HMS Warrior (Britain's first iron-clad battleship, built in 1860), the Royal Naval Museum and the remains of Henry VIII's 16th century warship, the Mary Rose, which were raised from the sea in 1982.
Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth and is now celebrated at the Charles Dickens' Birthplace Museum and it was also here that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created his most famous character, Sherlock Holmes.
The harbourfront has recently been crowned by the city's tallest structure, the 165m Spinnaker Tower, which forms the centrepiece of a regeneration scheme set to breathe life back into one of the world's most important naval centres.
