Located in West-Central Florida on the Gulf of Mexico Coast. Tampa was first settled in the early 1800s as Fort Brooke. Over time a town grew around the fort and took the name of Tampa after the large bay surrounding the city. It was incorporated as a city in 1855. The city grew after the arrival of the railroad and experienced a boom like the rest of Florida in the 1910s and 1920s. It was primarily a one-industry town, with cigar manufacturing and related industries that included box construction and lithography dominating the economy through the 1930s. But the city quickly diversified. Today, the city is a center for financial, industrial, and agriculture industries as well as tourism. Tampa is the third largest city in Florida and forms, with Saint Petersburg and Clearwater, the core of the state's second largest metropolitan area.
