Great Salt Lake City was founded in July 1847 by Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young. The town grew in importance as more settlers moved west. The "Great" was dropped from the name in 1868. Population tripled during the period of 1900-1930 to over 125,000. Many of the historic buildings from that period still remain today. Salt Lake is the capital of Utah and is also the largest city in the state. It is the seat of Salt Lake County which has a population of more than a million people. The Wasatch mountains rise just to the east, providing some of the best downhill skiing in North America. The 2002 Winter Olympics were held in and around Salt Lake City.
