Benidorm is a booming tourist resort in Costa Blanca, at the southeastern edge of Spain 40km from Alicante.
Locals call it "Little New York" or "Beniyork" because of its great number of high-rise buildings. Today it's home of Spain's tallest building, 186m high Gran Hotel Bali. Over 140 buildings with 20 or more floors have already been completed, incluiding Spain's tallest residential building Neguri Gane. The construction for mass tourism began already in the 60's, and today the city has about 145 hotels (38,000 beds) and a lot of apartments. It has surpassed Madrid in number of hotel beds and this will mean that only Paris and London have more hotel beds in Europe than Benidorm.
The official population is only 67,491 but it is estimated that total number of people staying in the city never falls below 110,000. During the summer there can be as many as 300,000 people staying in the city at the same time.
The tourist industry of this formerly silent fishing village accounts alone for around 1% of Spain's GNP, giving it enormous political clout. A recent addition is Terra Mitica, one of the largest fun parks in Europe.
