Cuiabá had its foundation in 1719 due to the gold rush, in just two decades Cuiabá became the biggest city in Brazil with immigrants from Europe and others Brazilian regions, but as far as the gold ended the city saw its population decrease quickly and it starts a period of isolation. The isolation lasted until the Paraguay War (1864–1870) where a big part of the state of Mato Grosso territory was occupied by Paraguayan troops causing an afflux of Cuiabá inhabitants, the city almost disappeared, with the end of the war a new period of isolation started and it only ended in 1940 with the new highways and airport connecting the city. The big boom began in 1970s with the construction of Brasilia (Brazil’s Capital) and a federal program of migration to the region. In the 1990s Cuiabá started to take advantage of its location in the geodesic center of South America becoming an import gateway to both Pacific (via Chile) and Atlantic oceans. Between 1970 and 2000 its population almost doubled each decade entering 21st century with approximately 900.000 inhabitants in its metropolitan area, and due to this rapidly growth the construction of skyscrapers also become faster each year. Nowadays Cuiabá take its wealth from tourism, because of its location among three ecosystems (Pantanal, Amazon and Cerrado), from the grains production in the countryside of the state and services, the industry still has a little participation in the wealth composition.
