Tiberia, Tverya in Hebrew, is nestled peacefully on the west shore of Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) some 200 meters below sea level, making it the lowest city in Israel. The upper part of the city, Tverya Ilit, is situated some 200 meters above sea level and consists of new residential neighbourhoods of the city. Founded nearly 2,000 years ago by Horodus and named after the Roman Emporer Tiberius, the city has become a favourite tourist location among local tourists as well as Christian pilgrims and Orthodox Jews, as it is one of the four Jewish holy cities along with Jerusalem, Hebron and Safed The tomb of the famous Rambam is located in the city, alongside many other tombs which have over the centuries gained religous importance. Tverya also served as a strategic outpost during the Ottoman rule. In 1948 it was still considered one of the largest cities in Israel and so gained its city status.
