From the Empire of the Hittites to the modern Republic of Turkey, the land called Anatolia has throughout its history been a crossroads of great civilizations - such as those of the Hittites, Urartus, Phrygians, Lydians, Trojans, Ionians, Assyrians, Persians, Macedonians of Alexander The Great, Galatians (Celts), Romans, Byzantines, Seljuk Turks and Ottoman Turks - who have all flourished in this ancient land. One of the world's two oldest cities with Jericho, "Catalhoyuk", is in Anatolia (Turkey). Turkey is also home to 2 of the "Seven Wonders of the World": 1) Temple of Artemis (Diana) at Ephesus (near Izmir) 2) Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (in present-day Bodrum) From Mt. Ararat where Noah's Ark landed, to Harran, the city of Abraham; from Ephesus where Apostle John and Virgin Mary died, to Antioch - home of the world's oldest church (St. Peter's of Antioch); from Tarsus, the city of Apostle Paul, to Myra, the city of Santa Claus; from the Seven Churches of Asia, where the Revelations were sent, to Cappadocia where the earliest Christians found refuge from Roman persecution in hidden villages carved inside of mountains: no other country in the world has more Biblical and Holy sites and cities than Turkey. All of the Ecumenical Councils were held on present-day Turkish soil. Istanbul, one-time capital of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, is still home to the highest Eastern Orthodox authority, the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Istanbul was also home to the last of the Muslim Caliphs. The personal belongings and artifacts of Prophet Mohammed and the earliest Caliphs are today preserved in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. Konya, one-time capital of the Seljuk Empire and the city of the world-famous philosopher Mevlana Rumi - and the "Whirling Dervishes" who follow his teachings - is still the world's most important center of Islamic mysticism.
